South Korea, Ecuador, England, Italy, and Japan eliminated, round of 16 set

The 16 teams in the race to the top have been finalized.

The South Korea U-20 team, led by head coach Kim Eun-joong, drew 0-0 with the Gambia in their third Group F match of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 at the Mendoza Stadium in Argentina on Monday at 6 a.m. ET.

With one win and two draws, South Korea (5 points) finished second in the group and advanced to the Round of 16. They will face Ecuador, who finished second in Group B, in the Round of 16. The Gambia (7 points), who topped Group F with two wins and a draw, will host Group E runner-up Uruguay.

The U-20 World Cup features a total of 24 nations divided into six groups of four teams. The best four teams from the first, second, and third place finishers in each group will make up the round of 16. The round of 16 has been finalized with the conclusion of Group F, which includes South Korea.

First up, the United States and New Zealand will face off at 2:30 a.m. on July 31. The U.S. finished first in Group B, while New Zealand earned a spot in the Round of 16 by finishing third in Group A. The same day, Uzbekistan and Israel will face off. Uzbekistan finished second in Pool A, while Israel finished second in Pool C.

There will be four games on Day 1. First-place Brazil will face third-place Tunisia in Pool D, while first-place Colombia will face third-place Slovakia in Pool C. The hosts will face first-place Argentina in Pool A, and second-place Israel will face third-place Slovakia in Pool B. Hosts and Group A champions Argentina will take on Group D third-placed Nigeria for a spot in the quarterfinals. Group F winner Gambia, who faced South Korea in the group stage, will take on Group E runner-up Uruguay on Feb. 2. On the same day, Group F runner-up South Korea will take on Group B runner-up Ecuador to advance to the quarterfinals. If South Korea defeats Ecuador, they will face the winner of Argentina-Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Japan ultimately tasted the bitter taste of group stage elimination. With one win and two losses, Japan (3 points, -1) is in third place in Group C and will have to wait for the other teams’ results. However, they were beaten by Nigeria (6 pts), New Zealand (4 pts), Slovakia and Tunisia (over 3 pts, +1) to advance to the round of 16.

It was Japan’s first group stage exit in 22 years, since 2001. They have not qualified for four consecutive tournaments since 2009, but reached the round of 16 in both 2017 and 2019.
