The South Korean men’s national tennis team fell to a 0-3 defeat against the Czech Republic in their second group match of the 2023 Davis Cup Finals. With the two losses, the team is effectively eliminated from the group stage.

The Korean men’s tennis team lost 0-3 to the Czech Republic in the second match of their Group C match at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals at the Pabellón Fuente de San Luis in Valencia, Spain on Thursday (Nov. 14). As in the first match, the national team’s top players, including Hong Seong-chan (Sejong City Hall), Kwon Sun-woo (Dangjin City Hall), and Nam Ji-sung and Song Min-kyu (Sejong City Hall-KDB Industrial Bank), all lost.

When the team was organized in March, Korea was ranked 15th and the Czech Republic 13th. The Czech Republic was considered the favorite to win Korea’s first ever Davis Cup main draw, but the result was a sweep. The Koreans were unable to stop the Czech Republic’s upset of Spain, which was the biggest upset of the group stage with a 3-0 victory in the first round.

South Korea is now 2-2 and -6 in set points. They are last in Group C. The Czech Republic, which swept Spain and South Korea, is the surprise group leader with two wins, followed by Serbia (one win) and Spain (one loss).

For South Korea to make it out of the group stage, several things need to happen. The Czech Republic needs to top the group with three wins, Korea, Spain, and Serbia need to be tied with one win and two losses, and they need to have the highest set margin. If Serbia wins today’s match between Serbia and Spain, Korea and Spain will be eliminated.
